Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites volunteers to become museum docents this fall. By leading visitor tours and sharing information about the Sheldon and its outstanding exhibitions, docents enjoy the rewards of assisting others while developing their knowledge about American art.
To apply for this fall's docent training course, volunteers must complete an application by Aug. 15. The course will begin Aug. 31, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Sheldon. Ongoing monthly training sessions will be held throughout the school year. To apply or nominate someone for the program, contact Karen Janovy, Director of Education, Sheldon Museum of Art, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 12th and R streets, Lincoln, NE 68588-0300, (402) 472-4524 or kjanovy1@unl.edu.
Docents must have time to volunteer, demonstrate a commitment to education in the visual arts, and have an enthusiasm about working with people of all ages. The course assists volunteers in becoming knowledgeable about the variety of artworks in Sheldon's collection, and provides information and materials for applicants to become proficient in touring skills.
Anyone wanting to learn about Sheldon and who can provide informational tours to both students and adults is welcome to apply. No special background or expertise is required. The program encourages people from throughout the community who share a commitment to the arts to assist others in enjoying one of the nation's finest university art museums. The program requires a commitment of one morning per week throughout the school year. Primary beneficiaries of the docent-led tours are Lincoln Public Schools fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students who visit Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Many additional tour groups are scheduled for afternoons and other days.
Sheldon houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects with a focus on American art. The Sheldon Art Association is the Sheldon's dedicated nonprofit support group. The museum, 12th and R streets on the UNL City Campus, is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5 pm Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Additional information is available on the Sheldon Web site, www.sheldon.unl.edu.
