KRNU, the campus radio station for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is reformatting programming to further strengthen its position as Lincoln's only authentic source for independent music. The new format will begin airing in time for the return of students for the fall semester, which starts Aug. 24.

In addition, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, which houses and oversees the station, is adding a second Web channel for additional student-produced programming. KRNU's Web address is http://krnu.unl.edu.

Rick Alloway, KRNU's general manager, said "Beginning this fall, the station is undergoing a programming adjustment and adding an additional Web channel that will nearly double the amount of available programming and the opportunities for majors in the college. This fine-tuning of the 90.3 KRNU format will create a modernized training experience for students while focusing more attention on the alternative/indie music interests of the 18-to-24-year-old listening audience. At the same time, the creation of the second Web channel will allow the continuation of the innovative and eclectic programming the college has always produced."

The radio station will continue to be student-run and to serve as an academic training vehicle.

"Some of the station's student-produced specialty shows will remain on the air, while others will move to the newly created Web channel, which will feature a similar music format but a more eclectic mix of specialty shows along with student-produced news and sports programs," Alloway said. "Just as 90.3 KRNU prepares to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the station's alternative/independent rock format, the program schedules for the broadcast station and its companion Webcast are being streamlined to accommodate more music throughout the day, targeting the 18-to-24-year-old demographic."

To promote the new format, KRNU will partner with local businesses and act as a resource for concerts and events. KRNU is helping to promote the University Program Council Big Red Welcome concert at 9 p.m. Aug. 22 on the Donald and Lorena Meier Commons and Plaza north of the Nebraska Union.
