Lincoln, Neb., October 22nd, 2009 —

A grant from Seismic Micro-Technology Inc. will enable the ANDRILL (Antarctic Geological Drilling) Science Management Office at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to offer more resources to the Antarctic geosciences community.

The three-year, $727,000 grant provides ANDRILL with a software license for SMT's Kingdom Suite seismic processing and interpretation software.

"The software license will be used to allow us to act as a service support hub for seismic data storage, processing, modeling, interpretation, visualization and dissemination to and from all ANDRILL partner institutions and colleagues," said Steve Fischbein, senior research associate in the ANDRILL Science Management Office. "The software will be used for Antarctic geosciences research and training within the ANDRILL organization."

Fischbein said the software will also aid in development of education and outreach visualization to assist in bringing Antarctic research to the public at large and in developing additional resources for teaching purposes.

"This will allow the broadest possible impact to the science community and the public," he said.

The grant is provided by SMT's University Gift Program and is renewable every three years. Seismic Micro-Technology Inc. is a global leader in developing exploration and production software for geoscientists.

ANDRILL is a multinational collaboration involving scientists from Germany, Italy, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Its purpose is to recover rock cores from beneath the Ross Sea region and other peripheral basins around Antarctica, and to use these data to develop a detailed history of the Antarctic climate and the expansion and contraction of the continent's ice sheets and ice shelves over the past 65 million years.

Operations and logistics for ANDRILL are managed by Antarctica New Zealand. Scientific research is administered and coordinated through the ANDRILL Science Management Office at UNL. For more information, visit http://andrill.org.
