As many as 1,400 students from 100 Nebraska high schools will participate Nov. 12 in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's annual Math Day, when the mathematical sciences will be promoted to students who will participate in recreational and competitive mathematical activities and explore math careers.
All students will start their day at 8 a.m. with an opening ceremony at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, followed by a multiple-choice, preliminary exam called PROBE I, (Problems Requiring Original Brilliant Effort). The top three boys and girls on the exam will receive trophies, and the top 50 scorers will move on to take the essay exam, PROBE II. The top 10 on the PROBE II exam are awarded a total of $34,000 in four-year scholarships to UNL.
Math Bowl competitions, in a quick-thinking, head-to-head, double-elimination tournament will be held for teams based on school divisions. Students will tour campus and participate in fun and enrichment activities presenting other academic areas including physics, chemistry and others.
Last year, UNL hosted 1,343 students from 99 Nebraska high schools. This is the 20th year for the event.
