WHERE: Nebraska East Union, Arbor and Center Drives, East Campus
On Dec. 8, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus engineering programs will host the fourth annual Incredible, Edible Car Competition starting at 2 p.m. in the Nebraska East Union, Arbor and Center drives.
The event caps off E-Day, an open house for prospective students of agricultural and biological systems engineering, gathering senior project displays and potential employers to meet with students.
The cars compete in distance and durability as they roll down ramps. The constraints are the components, which must be edible, and their cost, which must be less than $10 per team. Twenty teams will participate this year, with three or four students each. Teams have several weeks to design, brainstorm, shop, build prototypes, test and tweak. After the competition, while the judges tally the scores, the teams must eat their creations.
"With the edible cars, success depends on teamwork, preparation and a strong desire to play with your food," said Dennis Schulte, professor of biological systems engineering, who invites the community to enjoy the action. "It's cheaper than NASCAR, and just as much fun," Schulte said.
