College of Law announces tax law scholarship recipients

The University of Nebraska College of Law has announced two major scholarship awards for the 2009-10 academic year.

Grant Maynard of Bellevue is the 2009-10 recipient of the Philip Johnson-Great Plains Federal Tax Institute Scholarship and Shawn Beaudette of Norfolk is the 2009-10 recipient of the David A. Ludtke-Great Plains Federal Tax Institute Scholarship.

Maynard earned his bachelor's degree in marketing with high distinction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is in his third year of Nebraska's four-year JD/MBA program. He has been a volunteer income tax assistant, and spent the summer of 2009 working on tax and business-related projects as a clerk at Scudder Law Firm in Lincoln. He is the managing editor of the Nebraska Law Review and said he hopes to work as a corporate/transactional attorney after graduating in May 2011.

The $2,500 Philip Johnson-Great Plains Federal Tax Institute Scholarship was established by the Great Plains Federal Tax Institute in memory of Philip G. Johnson, a lawyer and CPA and co-founder of the institute. It is awarded annually to a College of Law student who has excelled in tax courses and has a strong interest in a career in tax law.

Beaudette is the son of Dave and Rose Beaudette and Cathy Janssen, all of Norfolk. He resides in Norfolk and is married to Andrea Beaudette, and they have a 6-year-old son Haydyn. Beaudette is a 1998 graduate of Norfolk High School. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1998 to 2002, stationed in Colorado and Germany. Upon leaving the Air Force, Shawn obtained his bachelor's degree, cum laude, in criminal justice from Wayne State College. Beaudette is a third-year law student and upon passing the Nebraska bar exam will join the firm of Lammli and Locke in Norfolk, where he clerks.

The $1,100 David A. Ludtke-Great Plains Federal Tax Institute Scholarship was established by the Great Plains Federal Tax Institute in honor of long-time board member and tax attorney David A. Ludtke. It is awarded annually to a College of Law student who has demonstrated an interest in taxation, business or related subjects.
