Lincoln, Neb., January 11th, 2010 —

The Society of Actuaries has recognized the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Actuarial Science Program as one of its first Centers of Actuarial Excellence.

The society has renewed the emphasis on strengthening the role of academics within the actuarial profession to capitalize on the potential to enhance research and intellectual capital development. Strong academics can help the profession grow stronger, and play an integral role in advancing actuarial knowledge.

Criteria for the designation include a requirement for a degree program, a curriculum that covers the society's learning objectives, a minimum number of high quality graduates each year, tenured faculty and connection to the industry. This year is the first year for the recognition and only 12 schools were selected.

"We believe that achieving the Center of Actuarial Excellence designation is extremely important for the ongoing success of UNL's Actuarial Science Program." said Warren Luckner, David P. Hayes memorial chair in actuarial science and director of the UNL Actuarial Science Program.

"Ultimately, it is a recognition of the proud history of actuarial education at Nebraska and the outstanding contributions that generations of UNL actuarial science students, alumni, faculty and staff have made to the actuarial profession and the financial well-being of individuals, organizations and society," Luckner said.

The UNL Actuarial Science Program has 173 students. It is part of the Department of Finance in the College of Business Administration. In 2008, the department was designated as one of only 20 partner schools by the CFA Institute.
