Sheldon Statewide presenting text and visual art exhibition

Lincoln, Neb., May 13th, 2010 —

Sheldon Museum of Art introduces its 2010-11 Sheldon Statewide exhibition, "Messaging: Text and Visual Art." On view at Sheldon through Aug. 1, the exhibition explores the use of language in art.

Approximately 20 works of art from the Sheldon's permanent collection make up "Messaging: Text and Visual Art." These include prints, photographs and multimedia works, by artists Ed Ruscha, Jenny Holzer, Steve Lambert, Barbara Kruger, Walter Robinson, Carrie Mae Weems, Robert Indiana and others.

Beginning in August, the Sheldon Statewide exhibition will travel to seven Nebraska communities. Educational and interpretive materials will be available for greater Nebraska audiences.

The Sheldon Statewide schedule is:

* Aug. 25-Sept. 26 -- Chadron State College

* Sept. 29-Oct. 31 -- McKinley Education Center, North Platte

* Nov. 2-Dec. 2 -- Museum of the High Plains, McCook

* Jan. 5-Feb. 4, 2011 -- Gallery 92 West/Fremont Area Art Association, Fremont

* Feb. 5- March 7 -- Columbus Art Gallery, Columbus

* March 9-April 11 -- Cornerstone Bank, York

* May 15-June 15 -- Library and Arts Center, Stalder Gallery, Falls City

Sheldon Statewide is an outreach education and exhibitions program of the Sheldon Museum of Art. Since its inception in 1987 the program has reached more than 275,000 people in 24 Nebraska communities. It is made possible by the generous support of Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. of Nebraska, Lonnie Pierson Dunbier, the Sheldon Art Association and the Nebraska Arts Council.

Sheldon Museum of Art houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects, primarily focusing on American art. Sheldon, 12th and R streets on the UNL City Campus, is open free to the public during regular hours: Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; closed Mondays.
