'Graduate Tangents: Converging Concepts in Textiles' at Hillestad Gallery

"Dotted Landscapes," a handbag designed by UNL graduate student Sandra Starkey, was inspired by artist Thomas Hart Benton and his 1930s landscapes. It features French knots, beading and machine stitching over wool and leather. (Photographs by Bob Meier).

"Graduate Tangents: Diverging Concepts in Textiles" at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is an exhibition that features a diversely personal body of work created by seven graduate students in UNL's Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design.

The exhibit highlights a wide range of perspectives that demonstrate the effectiveness of expression through textile and apparel design.

Works explore ideas related to conservation and recycling, marketability, historical dress, personal exploration and fantasy. Research based on traditional Asian dress influences many of the designers, resulting in unique interpretations of the kimono and a design aesthetic that incorporates origami and ideals based on minimalism and "wabi sabi." Students use a wide range of surface design techniques including digital printing, smocking, beading, hand-stitching, discharge and papermaking.

The Hillestad Gallery hosts the show June 21-July 2. The exhibition is coordinated and installed by the artists themselves. Designers include Tacia Booton, Melissa Caldwell, Karen DeCristoforo, Thais Regina De Oliveira, Sandra Starkey, Katie Taylor Frisch and Erica White. The gallery will be open 5-7 p.m. June 25 for a reception for the artists.

The Hillestad Gallery is part of the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences. The gallery is on the second floor of the Home Economics Building on East Campus, on 35th Street north of East Campus Loop [map]. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and by appointment.
