Bernadette Peters' Lied Center performance moved to March 12

Bernadette Peters, musical theater star, has moved her Lied Center performance to 7:30 p.m. March 12 from the previously announced Oct. 1.

The change enables Peters to perform as Desiree Armfeldt in Broadway's "A Little Night Music" by Stephen Sondheim. Peters will take over the role from Catherine Zeta Jones, with a first performance July 13. Peters will perform opposite Elaine Stritch (Madame Armfeldt) in the acclaimed production by Trevor Nunn, showing at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

"We're excited for Peters that she was chosen to take on this Broadway role, though we're disappointed to have to wait five more months to host her in Lincoln. Peters is such a phenomenal artist -- it's a testament to the strength of the Lied that we are able to attract such great talent," said Bill Stephan, Lied Center for Performing Arts executive director.

Season ticket holders who have already purchased seats to the Oct. 1 performance will automatically be issued new tickets for March 12.

Peters' performance in "A Little Night Music" will be her first time performing the role of Desiree, but it follows a career-long love affair with the music of Sondheim. Peters' first Sondheim role was in 1984 opposite Mandy Patinkin in "Sunday in the Park with George," for which she received a Tony nomination for best actress in a musical. In 1987, Peters starred in Sondheim's "Into the Woods," receiving another Tony nomination for best outstanding actress in a musical. In 1997, Peters released a Grammy-nominated solo album called "Sondheim, Etc." that she subsequently performed at Carnegie Hall live in 2005. Other Sondheim performances include a 2003 revival production of "Gypsy" and a featured performance at a March 2010 tribute concert in honor of Sondheim's 80th birthday.
