A new exhibit of student textiles work, "Addressing the Body: Lessons in Quilting," is on display through March 18 at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus.

Barbara Trout, professor of textiles, clothing and design at UNL, guided students in transforming quilted textiles into sculptural body adornment in this companion exhibition to "Marseille: White Corded Quilting," an exhibition of antique French quilts from the Berenson Collection at the nearby International Quilt Study Center and Museum.

This students' work addresses the potential of quilted fabric to enhance the architectural structure of garments. In apparel design classes, students sketched and draped fabric to develop their design ideas and quilted the fabric to create dimension and further define texture. The moldable panels of fabric reiterate concept, project line and clarify space surrounding the body. While some students chose to work in color, many, inspired by the French white quilts, elected to work with white stitching on white ground to explore development of relief and volume.

The exhibit includes work from current student designers Andra Bose, Grand Island; Ashlie Campbell and Masey Rost, Omaha; Sylvia Cox, Erica Heusinkvelt and Crystal Hobson, Lincoln; Jacie Ochsner, Hastings; Anneliese Reid, Severn, Md.; and Kimberly Zarybnicky, Odell. It also includes garments designed by 2010 bachelor's graduates Danielle Anderson, the Netherlands; Cassandra Clayton, South Burlington, Vt.; Michelle Higgins New York City; Katie Kaiser, Denver; Kristen Vanhessche, Bellevue; and master's graduate Melissa Caldwell, Vernal, Utah. Dresses designed by Valentino and Ralph Rucci selected from the department's historic dress collection, feature stunning examples of channel stitching and quilting.

A dessert reception will be free and open to the public 5:30-8 p.m. Feb. 25. The reception is in conjunction with the College of Education and Human Sciences School House Supper and Evening of Fun.

The Hillestad Gallery is part of the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences.
