Lincoln, Neb., September 7th, 2011 —

September 11, 2001 is a day that changed America, a generation and the world.

Students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be honoring and remembering the victims of that day's tragic and horrific events as well as the members of the U.S. Armed Forces from Nebraska who have lost their lives defending freedom since that day.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the Nebraska Union Plaza, a Memorial Ceremony will begin with the following speakers and events:

  • Presentation of Colors by the UNL ROTC Color Guard and playing of the National Anthem
  • Remarks from student body president Lane Carr, special guest speaker Malika Yadgaro, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Juan Franco, and Major Alex Jack Ramthun of the U.S. Marine Corps-Marine Officer Instructor.

The ceremony will conclude with a candlelight vigil and prayer service led by a representative of UNL Association of Campus Religious Workers. ASUN's Government Liaison Committee served as planners for the event.

A 9/11 memorial is set up on both City and East campuses. The memorial features flags that represent each of the 70 soldiers from Nebraska who have been killed since 2001, photos of those soldiers, a 9/11 documentary, a writing wall, and a BlueStar Mothers donation box. The memorial is on display in the East Union and green space through Sept. 7. The memorial is on display in the Nebraska Union and Meier Commons Sept. 8-12.

The service and memorial displays are free and open to the public.

UNL's Office of Civic Engagement is also hosting a day of service, 2 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 11. UNL groups will complete basic community service activities at various locations across Lincoln. Faculty, staff and students can register for the service event by sending email to service-learning@unl.edu or calling (402) 472-6150.
