Another contest for Game Day: Recycling Challenge

The Huskers face another competition during the Oct. 29 game versus Michigan State -- a recycling challenge. UNL Recycling is looking for volunteers to help collect recyclables following that game as part of  EPA’s Game Day Challenge. This is the second year that University of Nebraska-Lincoln is participating in this nationwide contest.

Throughout the Huskers’ football season the “Go Green for Big Red” project recycles in the tailgating areas around the Memorial Stadium. But for the Michigan State game, volunteers will help gather all the materials inside the stadium.

For the Game Day Challenge, college and universities across the country compete at one home football game for “green” bragging rights. The competition covers five categories: Total Recycling, Diversion Rate, Green House Gas Reduction, Waste Reduction, and Organic Recycling.  Last year more than 75 universities participated in the competition.

UNL Landscape Services is teaming up with Husker Athletics, ROTC, Recycling Enterprise and student groups including Sustain UNL, Graduate Student Association and ASUN student government, to collect recyclable outside the stadium as well as picking up inside the stadium following the game.

This year “Go Green for Big Red” will be supported by Schneider Electric, allowing student volunteers to focus their attention on the post-game efforts inside the stadium. This huge undertaking will require as many as 100 volunteers.
