The Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present a new exhibition, "Marking the Prairie Sublime: Paintings and Prints by Jonathan Goodding."

The exhibition will run Jan. 3 to April 1, and the artist will be present for a First Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 3.

Goodding is a native of Lincoln and a UNL graduate. He works in oil paint, lithography, and intaglio to create striking landscapes of the region that has always been his home. "He is clearly able to articulate his artistic vision, and his skill at painting and printmaking are both impressive," said Amber Mohr, curator of the museum. "Jonathan portrays in his landscapes -- particularly in his palette which can look a bit acrid, and his use of line which can be dizzying -- the terrible and magnificent sublimity of nature."

Goodding describes his work in his artist's statement: "As I seek to make landscapes that are visually and emotionally powerful, I find a strong affinity with the Romantic painters of the sublime landscape, such as (J.M.W.) Turner or (Casper David) Friedrich. Although the aesthetics of my work are heavily influenced by abstract expressionism, it is the concept of the sublime that most eloquently describes the intentions I have for my artwork. A sublime landscape possesses a sense of grandeur, intensity and importance: It has the ability to make humans feel small, to see their lives with perspective and their troubles as less important."

The exhibit runs concurrent with a permanent collection exhibition, "Transported with Wonder."

The Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St., is open to the public 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:30-5 p.m. Sundays (closed Mondays, holiday weekends and between exhibitions). There is no admission charge. For more information, visit www.unl.edu/plains/gallery/gallery.shtml
