Quilt museum schedules National Quilting Month activities in March

Lincoln, Neb., February 28th, 2012 —

            The International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will celebrate National Quilting Month in March with the following activities:

            Friday, March 2, 5:30 p.m., public lecture -- Ellen Rushman, quilt studies graduate student, "Modern Quilting: DIY (Do It Yourself) Discourse." A reception sponsored by the Lincoln Quilters Guild will follow. Admission to the museum is free from 4:30 to 7 p.m. this day.

            March 2-31 -- Exhibition of quilts made by members of the Modern Quilt Relish, a guild in Des Moines, Iowa. Modern quilts have grown out of historic American quiltmaking tradition, however, they often include a bright array of fabrics, and many move away from the block format toward a more minimalist product.

            Saturday, March 17, National Quilting Day -- Free admission from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Demonstrations and lectures on all floors from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Lincoln Quilters Guild, the Nebraska State Quilt Guild, Handi Quilter and Sew Creative. 

            Tuesday, March 27, noon, Tuesday Talk -- Christine Humphrey, quilt studies M.A. graduate, "Reclaiming the Past: Craft, Activism, Femininity, and Feminism."

            Saturday, March 31, 12:30-3:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 1, 1:30-4:30 -- Workshops: Let's Create! Monoprint and Dyeing Surface Design for Adults, register at 402-472-6549.

            The International Quilt Study Center and Museum is the home of a world-class collection of quilted objects from more than 30 countries and spanning four centuries. Established in 1997, the center opened a new museum in 2008. The center's mission is to inspire an understanding of the cultural and artistic significance of quilts by collecting, preserving, studying, exhibiting and promoting discovery of quilts and quiltmaking traditions from many cultures, countries and times. The International Quilt Study Center is an academic program of the Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design in the UNL College of Education and Human Sciences.
