Lincoln, Neb., August 27th, 2012 —

For its fourth year, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's "Go Green for Big Red" recycling effort is recruiting student and community volunteers to recycle in parking lots and walkways around Memorial Stadium on Husker home football Saturdays. UNL Landscape Services will coordinate this effort with Recycling Enterprises.

Last year, 150 volunteers put in some 300 hours of their time to keep more than 9,500 pounds of plastic cups, bottles and aluminum cans from entering the landfill.

Recycling bins will be located near waste containers along high-traffic pedestrian walkways leading to Memorial Stadium. Tailgaters will be handed a green bag by the parking lot attendant as they drive in. Or these green bags will be handed out from the 10 A-frames located around the parking lots. Volunteers will walk the parking lots collecting the full green recycling bags and take them to the nearest recycling dumpster.

This effort still needs volunteers. Those interested can contact Prabhakar Shrestha or Jeff Henson, Recycling Coordinators, at 402-472-9139 or by sending email to recycling@unl.edu by Wednesday of each home gameday weekend.

"This is a great opportunity for any student groups, fraternities and sororities to get to know other members of the community while helping the university 'go green,'" Henson said.

Shrestha added: "'Go Green for Big Red' is an excellent statement of the university's sustainability mission. Our faculty, staff and students care for the environment and are willing to contribute their valuable time for the sake of environment."
