Author Lorrie Moore at public reading Sept. 26

            Known for her humorous and poignant prose and Midwest focus, internationally acclaimed fiction author Lorrie Moore will visit the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Sept. 26 for a free public reading. The event, sponsored by UNL's English Department and Creative Writing Program, is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St.

            Moore is the author of three short story collections: "Self Help," "Like Life" and "Birds of America." She has also written three novels: "Anagram," "Who Will Run the Frog Hospital" and "A Gate at the Stairs." Moore was awarded the O. Henry Award for her short story, "People Like That Are the Only People Here," as well as the Rea Award for the Short Story for her achievements in that genre. "A Gate at the Stairs" was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award.

            Moore is the Delmore Schwartz Professor in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she teaches creative writing.

            Her fiction often takes place in the Midwest and deals with themes of failed relationships, illness and motherhood. She is noted for her ability to embed humor and wit into stories that often feature dejected lovers on the verge of personal crisis.
