In 1952, Amalia Hernandez, dancer and choreographer, founded the Ballet Folklorico of Mexico, having embarked, at a very early age, on a never-ending quest to rescue the dancing traditions of Mexico.  International success was achieved during the first tour and has been maintained through 50 years of incessant artistic endeavors. Starting from the 1960s, Amalia Hernandez and the Ballet Folklorico of Mexico developed choreographies for 40 ballets, composed of 76 folk dancers. The music, technical perfection, sophisticated wardrobe and original choreographies create this singular character of the ballet.

The company has completed more than 100 international tours, including 52 visits to the United States. All ages will be transported by the music, motion, color and culture of this troupe. Children are enchanted by the spectacle; through its history Ballet Folklorico of Mexico has entertained more than 1.4 million youths.

The Lied Center’s 23rd season is supported by Friends of Lied, Ameritas and Union Bank. All events in the Lied Center are made possible entirely or in part by the Lied Performance Fund, which has been established in memory of Ernst F. Lied and his parents, Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. The Nebraska Arts Council, a state agency, has supported the programs of this organization through its matching grants program funded by the Nebraska Legislature; the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.
