The Cleveland Orchestra, one of the world's most celebrated orchestral ensembles, will make its Nebraska debut at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Lied Center for Performing Arts on Feb. 27, 2014, as part of the Lied's 2013-14 season of world-class events.

Lied Center executive director Bill Stephan and artistic director Ann Chang will announce the orchestra's performance at the Lied Center during a special on-stage event today. The Cleveland Orchestra is included in the exclusive "Big Five" of American orchestras, the others being the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Philadelphia Orchestra. Gramophone Magazine also ranked the Cleveland Orchestra among the top 10 orchestras in the world in 2008 as part of a ranking of orchestras by classical music critics worldwide.

"The Lied Center has presented some of the finest classical music artists in the world to Nebraskans since our opening in 1990 including Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and the Philadelphia Orchestra," Stephan said. "The Cleveland Orchestra's concert at the Lied will mark its first appearance in Nebraska and highlights the classical performances coming to the state of Nebraska next year."

For its concert at the Lied Center, the Cleveland Orchestra will be led by internationally renowned conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. The orchestra's program features Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64 and a soloist yet to be announced.

Chang said that in addition to the Cleveland Orchestra's performance at the Lied, members of the orchestra are scheduled for educational outreach and will work directly with students in UNL's School of Music. "The chance for students at our School of Music to engage and learn from some of the finest musicians in the world is truly an incredible experience that will benefit their growth and development as aspiring performers for years to come," she said.

The Cleveland Orchestra continues to set standards of artistic excellence, imaginative programming, and community engagement. The ensemble's performances remain one of the most rewarding and thought-provoking experiences in the music world, exposing audiences to new music and favorite repertoire in programs that feature the best soloists from across the globe.

Tickets to The Cleveland Orchestra’s performance will be available as part of season ticket orders in May along with the rest of the Lied Center's 2013-14 season.
