Filmmaker Julie Dash is keynote for Ethnic Studies' 'Spring Celebration'

            The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Institute for Ethnic Studies' "Spring Celebration 2013" will feature a keynote lecture by novelist and filmmaker Julie Dash.

            The talk, "Find the Good and Praise It," is 7 p.m. April 4 in the Sheldon Museum of Art auditorium, 12th and R streets. A book signing follows the lecture. The event is free and open to the public.

            Dash is the Bob Allison Media Professor in the Department of Communications at Wayne State University in Detroit. Her film, "Daughters of the Dust," will be screened at 2 p.m. April 5 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, 313 N. 13th St. Dash will lead a question and answer session following the screening. The screening and talk are free and open to the public.

            Dash is also scheduled to visit with students from UNL and Lincoln Public Schools and will participate in a 7 p.m. April 5 reception and book signing at Indigo Bridge Books, 701 P St.

            Dash was born and raised in New York City. With the debut of "Daughters of the Dust" in January 1992, Dash became the first African-American woman to have a full-length general theatrical release in the United States.
