The Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln' Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts will celebrate its fourth season this spring with an exploration of "The Ancient World Seen Through Modern Eyes." The symposium will examine how the performing arts have returned consistently to classical antiquity and ancient mythologies to make sense of the contemporary.
David Herskovits, award-winning director of Target Margin Theater, will present a public lecture from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. April 11 in Room 202 of the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center, 15th and S streets. Advance reservations are encouraged by calling the IAS office at 402-472-5186.
"David is a brilliant and charismatic man, who speaks with deep clarity, wisdom and humor about his life in the theater and about his innovative directorial methods," said Rhonda Garelick, IAS founder and artistic director. "His talk will be of great interest to theater students, theater lovers and anyone fascinated by the worlds of the stage and literature."
Herskovits' lecture also serves as precursor and introduction for his return to Lincoln later this month, April 23 and 24, when Target Margin Theater presents a double-bill: "The Argument" and "Dinner Party," based on philosophical works by Aristotle and Plato, adapted for the stage by Herskovits. The plays will be performed back-to-back each night at the Johnny Carson Theater in the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are available at http://www.liedcenter.org.
A highly esteemed artist, Herskovits has performed and directed all over the world. In 1991, he founded New York City's Target Margin Theater, now in its 22nd season producing updated interpretations of ancient and classical works. His 1998 production of "Mamba's Daughters" by Dorothy and DuBose Heyward won an Obie Award.
