The Omaha World-Herald chose four undergraduates from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications to work as fellows at the newspaper in the fall.
The students took part in Real World I course (a collaboration between UNL and the World-Herald) in the spring semester, and will contribute stories and/or photos to the paper, working alongside its journalists and photographers. They will also continue their studies at the college during the semester.
The students are:
Kaylee Everly, a sophomore from Fremont who was part of a team of photojournalism students who reported last year on poverty in Kyrgyzstan. She spent time in coal mines and with injured miners in Tash-Kumyr. She spent three weeks last summer in India, reporting on migrant train workers, and more recently traveled to Brazil to photograph disabled children. In May, she will venture to Ethiopia to work on another in-depth multimedia project. Previously, she worked as an intern and correspondent for the Fremont Tribune and serves as a staff photographer for the Daily Nebraskan, the UNL student newspaper. She is the daughter of Keith and Heidi Everly.
Anna Gronewold, a senior news-editorial major and Spanish minor from Omaha who has reported on arts and entertainment, as well as edited copy for the Daily Nebraskan. She handles stories and headlines for the news, features and sports sections. She is interested in infographics and their use in magazines. Gronewald is the daughter of Russ and Jane Gronewold.
Ruth Oliver, a junior news-editorial major from Bellevue, is a newsroom intern at the Lincoln Journal Star and freelances as a copywriter for Hurrdat Social Media. She also works as a reporter for the College of Journalism and Mass Communications' in-depth Native Daughters 2 project about Native American women in Oklahoma. Previously, she was an intern for KETV Newswatch 7 in Omaha and a reporter for the Daily Nebraskan's arts and entertainment staff. The daughter of Robert and Chong Oliver, she likes reading classic literature and creative writing when she is away from work.
Andrew Ward, a junior broadcasting major from Robins, Iowa, is sports editor at the Daily Nebraskan, where he oversees 14 reporters. He has covered women's tennis, soccer, women's basketball, football and men's basketball and served as an assistant editor. He also worked as a sports intern at Sourcemedia Group/The Gazette Co., covering high school baseball, softball and tennis, along with semi-professional golf tournaments and summer basketball leagues for the Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette. He also covered sports for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids and plans to intern at the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel this summer. Ward placed ninth in the Hearst Sports Writing Competition this spring and finished first in the Roper Sports Writing competition. He's the son of Gary and Geralyn Ward.
The Omaha World-Herald fellows are chosen through an application and interview process. Students must be enrolled in or have completed the Omaha World-Herald "Real World" class. The class is the result of a partnership between the Omaha World-Herald and the College of Journalism and Mass Communications and is offered to juniors and seniors. During the 15-week class, students learn from a different World-Herald staff member each week on topics such as editing, interviewing and covering all aspects of the news. The Real World class began in fall 2008 and is offered every semester.
