UNL 4th in Hearst Journalism Awards Program

            The University of Nebraska-Lincoln finished fourth in the Overall Intercollegiate Championship in the 53nd annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

            Three students from the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications were among 29 finalists who competed in the National Championship Round, June 3-7 in San Francisco. Camila Orti of Lincoln took second place in television; Lanny Holstein of Omaha won third in radio; and Faiz Siddiqui of West Chester, Ohio, was a runner-up in writing.

            It is the third year in a row that Nebraska has placed in the top five of the 106 accredited schools eligible to compete, following a second-place finish in 2011 and fifth in 2012. UNL placed in the top 10 in four categories: third in intercollegiate multimedia, sixth in intercollegiate photojournalism, eighth in intercollegiate broadcast news and ninth in the intercollegiate writing.

            In addition, UNL captured six individual top-10 finishes: two in writing, one in photojournalism, two in broadcast news and two in multimedia. The six winning students are: Siddiqui, third in feature writing and fourth in sports writing; Anna Reed of Omaha, fourth in Photo I news and features; Holstein, fourth in radio; Orti, third in television; Andrew Dickinson of Fairway, Kan., third in Multimedia II human condition; and Morgan Spiehs of Wood River, fifth in Multimedia II human condition.

            Often called the Pulitzer competition of college journalism, the Hearst Journalism Awards Program is conducted under the auspices of the accredited schools of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication and is fully funded and administered by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. It consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, three broadcast news competitions and four multimedia competitions with championship finals in all divisions.
