The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Ethics Bowl team won the Rocky Mountain Regional Competition of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Nov. 2.

The UNL team's undefeated run through the regionals assured its spot the national competition in Florida early next year -- a first for the university.

UNL's Robert J. Kutak Center for the Teaching and Study of Applied Ethics sent two teams to compete in the regional event at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In the competition, teams presented resolutions to ethical dilemmas before a panel of judges and an opposing team.

The winning squad included Maddie Bien, a junior anthropology major from Lincoln; Kate Miller, a senior philosophy major from Omaha; Tony Moran, a junior philosophy major from Johnson; Sarah O’Neill, a junior global studies and political science major from Lincoln; and Oliver Tonkin, a senior global studies and political science major from Lincoln. They will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the national Ethics Bowl on Feb. 27.

Hundreds of students in teams across the United States and Canada compete in 10 regional Ethics Bowl competitions each fall. The teams argue and defend their moral assessment of some of the most troubling and complex ethical issues facing society. Questions address a wide array of topics in business and professional ethics, in personal relationships and in social and political affairs.
