UNL students win 2 South Central Broadcasting Society grand prizes

University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications broadcasting students and members of the National Broadcasting Society were awarded two grand prizes at the South Central Broadcasting Society conference and award ceremony Oct. 2-3.

"It was great for our broadcasting students to have their work judged alongside that of other universities -- and to see just how terrific their work is," chapter adviser Laurie Thomas said.

Tommy Rezac of Valparaiso and Kellan Heavican of Rogers earned a grand prize for Audio Sports Program for their broadcast of the basketball game "Schuyler vs. Lakeview Final." Haley Herzog of Omaha received a grand prize for Video Hard News/Spot News for her piece on Maury Lorence's death.

UNL also received nine finalist awards:

> Audio News or Sports Talent: Kellan Heavican, "Exeter Milligan vs. Wilcox Hildreth Basketball"

> Video Hard News/Spot News: Brent BonFleur of Gordon, "Cyber Bully Bill"; and Chelsea Eaton of Eagan, Minn., "Drone Standoff"

> Video News Feature Package: Kayla Van Wie of Scottsdale, Ariz., "Breast Cancer Detection"; and Brent BonFleur, "K2 Synthetic Marijuana"

> Video News Program: Star City News, spring 2015

> Video Station Imaging or Collective Project Campaign: BRDC 462 Advanced Production class, Star City News opening

> Video Magazine, Game Show or Entertainment Program: BRDC 472 Advanced Reporting class, Election Night; and BRDC 462 Advanced Reporting class, "Nside the Music"

Five students and members of the NBS Lincoln chapter attended the conference at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas: Kellan Heavican, Jeremy Davis, Lauren Hubka, Christian Powers and Benjamin A. Schoenkin. While there, the students had the opportunity to tour Cowboy Stadium and WFAA-TV, an ABC affiliate, in Dallas.

The SCBS is a cooperative of schools in the South-Central region of the United States started in 2011. The schools work together to run a regional competition and conference. It is unaffiliated with any other broadcasting organization.
