UNL Hosts Summer Leadership Program
UNL's Leadership Summer Program kicks off Monday and runs this week. The event, part of the Global Leadership Institute, stimulates leadership development of students from historically block colleges and universities.
GLI's Summer Institute (GLSI) is designed to stimulate the leadership development of African American student leaders. GLSI begins with the understanding that leadership development fundamentally involves the exploration of leadership capacities that can be developed and managed in ways that enhance the performance of individuals, groups, and organizations.

'Reinhardt wins Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize
Ruling Pine Ridge: Oglala Lakota Politics from the IRA to Wounded Knee" by Akim D. Reinhardt is this year's winner of the Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize from the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
James Stubbendieck, director of the center, made the announcement May 7 at the center's annual meeting. "Our judges chose Reinhardt's book as the best representation of nonfiction books published in 2007," said Stubbendieck. more...

Cather Archive Takes Nebraska Author Global
Any Nebraskan knows a few bits of Willa Cather trivia. We read "My Antonia" in high school. We've passed through her hometown of Red Cloud. Cather is a familiar face in Nebraska libraries and classrooms.

Body of War and Caramel Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Body of War and Caramel. Both films will show through May 22.
Body of War is an intimate and transformational feature documentary about the true face of war today. Meet Tomas Young, 25 years old, paralyzed from a bullet to his spine - wounded after serving in Iraq for less than a week. Body of War is his coming home story as he evolves into a new person, dealing with his disability and finding his own unique and passionate voice against the war. The film is produced and directed by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro; Karen Bernstein is co-producer; and Bernadine Colish serves as editor. The film features two original songs by Eddie Vedder. Body of War is a nakedly honest portrayal of what it's like inside the body, heart and soul of this extraordinary and heroic young man.
In Caramel, five women meet regularly in a beauty salon in Beirut, a colorful and sensual microcosm of the city where several generations come into contact, talk and confide in each other. Layale loves Rabih, but Rabih is married. Nisrine is Muslim and her forthcoming marriage poses a problem; she is no longer a virgin. Rima is tormented by her attraction to women and especially to a lovely client with long hair. Jamale is refusing to grow old. Rose has sacrificed her life to take care of her elderly sister. In the salon, their intimate and liberated conversations revolve around men, sex and motherhood, between haircuts and sugar waxing with caramel.
