UNL Research Funding Hits Record of More Than $122 Million

Total research funding at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln increased nearly 13 percent this year to a record of more than $122 million, according to the UNL Office of Research.

Total research funding, which includes all external funds awarded for university research, was $122,452,344 in the fiscal year ending June 30. The increase, up from $108.3 million in fiscal 2008, is UNL's largest ever year-to-year research funding growth. more...

Repertory Theatre Holds Conversations With Cavett Event

The Nebraska Repertory Theatre will welcome Dick Cavett to campus on Saturday, August 1, for a candid and personal conversation about his singular interviews with the great icons of the entertainment world. Big screen video excerpts from his television encounters with Katherine Hepburn, Groucho Marx, Bette Davis, Norman Mailer and others will be featured along with personal anecdotes and highlights of the life of a kid from Nebraska who has made the big time but has not forgotten his roots.

Tickets for a 2:00 p.m. "Conversations" in Howell Theatre are $40 per person. A 7:00 p.m. "Conversations" in Studio Theatre followed by desserts and cocktails with Mr. Cavett are $100 per person. For more information, vist the Repertory Theatre website.

Ross Media Arts Center Launches Griep's Chemistry in Movies Book

The Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host a launch party Aug. 1 for "ReAction: Chemistry in the Movies," a book by Mark Griep, associate professor of chemistry at UNL and Marjorie Mikasen, a geometric artist. The party will begin with a reception and book signing at 5:30 p.m.

"ReAction! Chemistry in the Movies" gives a scientist's and artist's response to the dark and bright sides of chemistry found in more than 110 films. Although it offers examples of screen chemistry between actors and behind-the-scenes special effects, this book focuses on when chemistry becomes a part of a film's narrative. more...

 

Sheldon Museum of Art Seeks Volunteers to Become Museum Docents

Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln invites volunteers to become museum docents this fall. By leading visitor tours and sharing information about the Sheldon and its outstanding exhibitions, docents enjoy the rewards of assisting others while developing their knowledge about American art.

To apply for this fall's docent training course, volunteers must complete an application by Aug. 15. The course will begin Aug. 31, 9 a.m. to noon, at the Sheldon. Ongoing monthly training sessions will be held throughout the school year. more...
