Mars Rover Engineer Nagin Cox to Speak at UNL

Nagin Cox of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Oct. 9 and 10 to share the dramatic story of the Mars exploration missions with students and community members.

Cox is deputy chief of the engineering team for the rovers and for the spacecraft that delivered the rovers to Mars. Cox will give a public lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. (room posted). She will also appear at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at the University of Nebraska State Museum (Morrill Hall), south of 14th and Vine streets. Cox will show pictures and answer questions as she addresses, "Hitting the Road on Mars: The Legacy of the 2004 Mars Exploration Rovers and the next Missions to Mars." Best-Selling Author, Sociologist James Loewen to Speak at UNL
James Loewen

James Loewen, a sociologist and author of "Lies my Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong," will speak and sign books at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Nebraska Union Auditorium, 1400 R St.

He will also give a lecture, "How History Keeps Us Racist and What College Educators Can Do About It," for teaching assistants, instructors, professors and members of the UNL and Lincoln communities interested in race relations that afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Love Library Auditorium. Sheldon Presents Dance by Thomas F. DeFrantz
Thomas F. DeFrantz

The Hixson-Lied Interdisciplinary Arts Symposium presents dance by Thomas F. DeFrantz, MIT Theater Arts and Dance professor and director of Women's & Gender Studies. His tap dance solo, "MONK," explores the life of jazz great Thelonius Monk. The performance at 7:30 p.m. in the Sheldon Museum of Art on Friday, October 9 is free and the public is invited.

A writer and director, DeFrantz founded Slippage: Performance Interventions in Culture and Technology, a group in residence at MIT that showed new work in 2004, 2005, and 2006. His creative work includes Monk’s Mood: A Performance Meditation on Thelonious Monk, a solo performance piece that marries tap dance to digital technology, and Queer Theory!: An Academic Travesty, an exploration of literary theory through music, monologue, and dance. more...

 

Nebraska Student Organizing Conference
Nebraska Student Organizing Conference is Saturday

The Nebraska Student Organizing Conference (NSOC): "Organizing for Better Tomorrows" will take place Saturday, October 10 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Nebraska Union. Attendees will attend five hands-on workshops to expand their knowledge and skills to organize in their communities. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network with local organizations, community leaders, and fellow activists as they sharpen their skills and build toward a more unified progressive movement.

The conference begins with a keynote speaker followed by a strategic planning and interactive power-mapping exercise, and then a 45-minute issue orientation workshop. The latter half of the day features three skill building workshops hosted by experienced student organizers and community leaders. The conference is open to anyone—it is not limited to Nebraska residents, students, or young people. The conference begins at 8 a.m. and ends by 6:30 p.m. Breakfast, lunch, and a light snack will be provided. To learn more or register, visit the Nebraska Student Organizing Conference website.

David Axelrod NEBRASKA CHAMPIONS CLUB, FRI 8PM | WATCH LIVE STREAM
Obama Adviser Axelrod Speech Delayed til 8 p.m.

David Axelrod, senior adviser to President Barack Obama, will be at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Friday, Oct. 9. Axelrod will speak at 8 p.m. (note time change) at the Nebraska Champions Club for the Peter J. Hoagland Integrity in Public Service Lecture Series. The lecture is free and open to the public, with a limited number of seats available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Host for the event at UNL is the department of Political Science. Champions Club is located directly west of Memorial Stadium on Stadium Drive and Vine streets. The plaza/ground level area of the club has also been set up with overflow viewing of the talk on large-screen televisions. UNL's Van Brunt Visitors Center, 313 N. 13th St., will also have a live video/audio feed.

Prior to being named President Obama's senior adviser, Axelrod was senior adviser to the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition and Senior Strategist to Barack Obama's campaign for the presidency. Since 1988, Axelrod has been Senior Partner at the consulting firm AKP&D Message and Media in Chicago. Fortepianist Bilson to Perform at Lied Center

Malcolm Bilson, thought to be the world's greatest fortepianist, will perform the works of Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and more at Kimball Hall 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 as part of the Lied Center for Performing Arts' 20th Anniversary Season.

Bilson has been at the forefront of the period-instrument movement for more than 30 years and is one of the world's finest recognized leaders in the study and performance of the classic repertoire for the fortepiano, an 18th-century precursor to the modern-day piano. Bilson will perform on a fortepiano owned by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music. more...

You Never Can Tell STUDIO THEATRE, TEMPLE BUILDING, FRI, SAT 7:30PM
UNL's University Theatre Opens Season With "You Never Can Tell"

UNL's Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film's University Theatre opens its season with George Bernard Shaw's "You Never Can Tell" directed by Emeritus Professor Tice L. Miller. The play is a light and witty treatment of the follies of being human, especially when it comes to affairs of the heart.

Performances will be held October 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 all at 7:30 p.m. and October 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, first floor Temple Building, 12th and R Streets. Tickets are $16, $14 faculty/staff and senior citizen, $10 students with ID. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Ticket Office, 301 N. 12th Street Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the UNL Theatre Tickets website or at the theatre the evening of performance (subject to availability).
