Public Seminar and Reception Scheduled for Vice Chancellor of IANR Candidate
A series of visits is planned with four candidates identified by a search committee seeking to hire the new vice president and vice chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UNL. From 3:30 - 5:30 p.m., a public seminar and reception will be held for Cameron Hackney in the Nebraska East Union.
Hackney is dean of the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Sciences and director of the West Virginia Experiment Station at West Virginia University, a position he has held since 2000. Previously he was department head and professor of food science and technology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (1989-2000) and professor and superintendent of the Virginia Seafood Agricultural Experiment Station at Hampton, Va. (1985-1989). Prior to joining Virginia Polytechnic he was an assistant professor at Louisiana State University and a research assistant at North Carolina State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science and a master's in agricultural microbiology, both from West Virginia University, and a Ph.D in food science from North Carolina State.

Agee's Writing Prowess Honored
As a young girl, Jonis Agee loved writing and she loved horses.
One day, her father brought home a huge manual typewriter and a typing book from his downtown Omaha office.
"And so there I was, about 10 or 11 years old, and I thought, 'OK I'm going to learn to type, and I'm going to type this story about the last horse left over at the end of the Trojan war,'" Agee said.
A career began, and thirteen books later, the acclaimed novelist and UNL professor of English and creative writing has been awarded a University of Nebraska Outstanding Research and Creative Activity award. more...
Director of Namibian NGO to Give Public Seminar
Laurie Marker of the Cheetah Conservation Fund of Namibia will give a public seminar at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources on Thursday, May 6, 10-11 a.m., in the Hardin Hall Auditorium.
Marker is executive director of CCF, a research and education center in southern Africa. Twenty years ago Marker moved from the United States to Namibia to set up a research and conservation organization to increase cheetah populations. In her talk, "20 Years of Cheetah Conservation," Marker will discuss her organization's efforts to conserve cheetahs through research on cheetah genetics and breeding, as well as ecology, conservation and management. more...
STRATCOM Chief, Ex-U.N. Iraq Weapons Inspector at Space Law Conference

U.S. Air Force Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, and Ambassador Richard Butler, the United Nations' former chief Iraq weapons inspector, will be giving the two keynote speeches at the fourth annual Space and Telecommunications Law Conference at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law May 6-7.
Butler, an Australian diplomat who served as the United Nations' chief weapons inspector in Iraq during the 1990s, will deliver the conference's opening address at 9 a.m. May 6 in the new Hamann Auditorium in the College of Law's Ross McCollum Hall, East Campus Loop and Fair Street. Gen. Chilton's address will occur at 2:30 p.m. May 7 in the same location. more...

UNL Fulbright Count Up To 6; Journalism Students Travel to Slovakia, Brazil

Two more University of Nebraska-Lincoln students have been named prestigious Fulbright scholars -- among as many as eight at UNL this spring.
Karalynn Brown of Omaha, a news-editorial and English major who will graduate in August, and Jesse Starita of Lincoln, a 2006 broadcasting graduate, applied in October 2009 and heard the announcement in late March.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and founded in 1946, the Fulbright program provides funding for students, scholars, teachers and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. The flagship international educational program sponsored by the U.S. government, the program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries. more...
