STRATCOM Chief, Ex-U.N. Iraq Weapons Inspector at Space Law Conference

U.S. Air Force Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, and Ambassador Richard Butler, the United Nations' former chief Iraq weapons inspector, will be giving the two keynote speeches at the fourth annual Space and Telecommunications Law Conference at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law May 6-7.
Gen. Chilton's will give his address at 2:30 p.m. May 7 in the new Hamann Auditorium in the College of Law's Ross McCollum Hall, East Campus Loop and Fair Street. Butler, an Australian diplomat who served as the United Nations' chief weapons inspector in Iraq during the 1990s, delivered the conference's opening address on May 6. more...

UNL CALMIT Researchers in Gulf of Mexico Collecting Oil-Spill Images
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's involvement in a national research project is expanding in the wake of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Members of UNL's Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) are in Mississippi collecting data before the oil slick reaches the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. The project is part of a federal undertaking funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Environmental Cooperative Science Center. more...

Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and benefactor of the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree at the undergraduate commencement exercises at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln May 8. Raikes' talk is titled "Nebraska Can Change the World."
The late Ron Raikes, Jeff Raikes' brother, will receive the UNL Nebraska Builder Award. This prestigious award, one of the highest presented by the university, is given periodically at UNL to an individual who has contributed to building the programs or reputation of the university or the state of Nebraska. This award dates to 1946. Ron Raikes died Sept. 5, 2009, in a farming accident.
Undergraduate commencement exercises will begin at 9:30 a.m. May 8 in the Bob Devaney Sports Center, where approximately 2,000 students will receive diplomas. Commencement exercises for master's and doctoral candidates and the doctoral hooding ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. May 7 in the Devaney Center. P. Stephen Baenziger, university professor and Eugene W. Price professor of agronomy at UNL, will deliver the address to approximately 470 recipients of advanced degrees. 'Shrew'd' Survey of American Women Artists In Final Weekend
Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln presents "Shrew'd: The Smart & Sassy Survey of American Women Artists," its biennial invitational exhibition. It features work by a diverse group of American women artists who use aesthetic media to question social norms of representation in art, popular culture and everyday life.
"Shrew'd" continues the tradition of invitational exhibitions that were held by the Nebraska Art Association beginning in 1888 and continuing through 1964. Many important artworks in Sheldon's collections were acquired through these exhibitions. The invitational exhibition was renewed in 2005. "Shrew'd" will be on view through May 9. more...
