$1.3M Grant to Enhance Nanoscience Research
Materials science and nanotechnology researchers at UNL are getting some much-needed equipment that will help enhance and expedite their studies. UNL's Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience received a $1.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to purchase a state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope. This Major Research Instrumentation grant is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The transmission electron microscope uses electrons instead of light to show details of materials at the near-atomic level. It will enable researchers to characterize the structure and other properties of nanoscale materials and devices such as thin films, patterned surfaces, particles and wires. It also can map structure, composition and properties and provide 3-dimensional analysis. more...

An update to a Nebraska field guide has spawned a celebration of reptiles and amphibians. Herpetologist Daniel Fogell, a doctoral student in the School of Natural Resources, recently completed an update to "A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Nebraska," originally written in 1942. To celebrate the release, a Reptile Revelry Reception will be 4 to 6 p.m., June 29 at Hardin Hall. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include a live animal display, door prizes, refreshments and free parking.
As part of the field guide update, Fogell took all new photographs of the creatures. He also added several new species of amphibians and reptiles found in Nebraska and updated their geographical distributions. All records in the guide are based on voucher specimens in museums more...
