Nebraska Archaeological Survey

Nebraska Archaeological Survey Investigating at Red Willow Reservoir

The University of Nebraska State Museum's Nebraska Archaeological Survey began archaeological investigations at several prehistoric sites at Red Willow Reservoir (Hugh Butler Lake) in Frontier County, Nebraska, in September.

Support for this field work, which will continue seasonally through 2015, is provided through a grant from the Department of Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under a new five-year cooperative agreement with the UNL. These investigations will enable archaeologists to assess the scientific potential of cultural resources within this area of the Great Plains. more...

 

Navajo weaving
Navajo Weaving at Morrill Hall Oct. 7-9

During regular museum hours Oct. 7-9, Native American weavers will demonstrate their craft outside the Cooper Gallery on the third floor of Morrill Hall. Artists Martha Schultz, Melissa Cody, and Lola Cody, representing three generations of one Navajo family based in Arizona, will interact with visitors and show them the process of creating a handwoven tapestry first hand. Regular museum admission will be charged to attend these demonstrations. Admission is free for UNL students, staff, and faculty with valid NU Card.

These demonstrations are in conjunction with the new textiles exhibit, "A Turning Point: Navajo Weaving in the Late 20th Century." more...

UNL's University Theatre Opens Season With Dylan

University Theatre, the academic main stage producing wing of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, opens its 2010-2011 season with Dylan by Sidney Michaels. Dylan is on the Studio Theatre stage Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 7-9 and Tuesday through Friday, Oct. 12 – 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Set in 1950's Wales and America, Dylan follows acclaimed Welsh poet and public speaker Dylan Thomas to the colleges, bars and bedrooms of his last American tour and finally to the ship that carried him home. Tickets are $16, $14 faculty/staff and senior citizen, $10 students with ID. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Ticket Office, 301 N. 12th Street Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the UNL Theatre Tickets website or at the theatre the evening of performance (subject to availability).

Physics students gathering for conference Oct. 7-10

A four-day conference will gather student researchers in physics and related disciplines to connect them with their peers at other universities and leading scientists in their field.

This year's Conference for Students in Physics is scheduled for Oct. 7-10 on UNL's City Campus. It will feature presentations and panel discussions aimed at helping young people, particularly women and other underrepresented groups, get on the path to a career in physics. more...

 

Free, Confidential Depression Screenings Oct. 6-7

National Depression Screening Day is Oct. 7. The Employee Assistance Program and Counseling and Psychological Services are sponsoring free and confidential screenings Oct. 6 and 7. The Oct. 6 screenings are 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rec Center. The Oct. 7 screenings are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Nebraska and East unions.

Held annually during Mental Health Awareness Week in October, National Depression Screening Day is the nation's oldest voluntary, community-based screening program that provides referral information for treatment. Since 1991, more than half a million people each year have been screened for depressions nationwide during the screening day. more...
