LaserFest Weekend at Mueller Planetarium
From 1977 to 2004, Mueller Planetarium at the University of Nebraska State Museum entertained audiences with laser shows. Now, laser shows are back, but for one weekend only. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the laser that was first demonstrated in 1960, Mueller Planetarium in the State Museum's Morrill Hall will offer music-themed laser shows Oct. 8, 9 and 10. There will not be astronomy or fulldome shows on these dates.
With music ranging from the Beatles to Pink Floyd, to country artists, there is a laser show for everyone. more...
UNL Symphony Concert Oct. 10 Gets Technology Assist

Igor Stravinsky's "The Firebird" premiered in Paris on June 25, 1910. Nearly one hundred years later, the UNL Symphony Orchestra will tackle the opulent piece on Oct. 10 with an assist from some 21st century music technology.
The UNL Symphony Orchestra concert is at 3 p.m. Oct. 10 in Kimball Recital Hall. Tickets are $5 general and $3 for students and senior citizens and are available at the door. more...

Oct. 8 Lecture to Feature Astronomer Rector
Astronomer Travis Rector of the University of Alaska will present this year's Ruckman Lecture at UNL Oct. 8. Rector's 7 p.m. presentation, sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is titled "The Aesthetics of Astrophysics: How and Why Astronomical Images are So Beautiful."
The lecture will be in the Nebraska Union auditorium and is free and open to the public. Rector's talk will address how modern telescopes like the Hubble work, how astronomers use data from them for their research, how that data is transformed into vibrant, color images and the authenticity of such images. more...

New Material World Opens at Sheldon
New Material World: Rethreading Technology, opening at the Sheldon Museum of Art on Oct. 8, is a survey exhibition that highlights 10 contemporary artists from Canada, Denmark, Japan, South Korea and the United States. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Textile Society of America’s 2010 Conference, taking place in Lincoln Oct. 6-9. The show opens with a public reception 5-7 p.m. Oct. 8.

Fire-Juggling Men in Kilts Perform at the Lied Center
Entertain the whole family with comedy, theatre, music and juggling when the Flying Karamazov Brothers perform at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9. Part Marx Brothers and part Monty Python, the Karamazov Brothers were hailed by the New York Times as "100 minutes of cleverness and comedy that go by in a flash" and "as close to a sure thing as can be found onstage."

Physics students gathering for conference Oct. 7-10
A four-day conference will gather student researchers in physics and related disciplines to connect them with their peers at other universities and leading scientists in their field.
This year's Conference for Students in Physics is scheduled for Oct. 7-10 on UNL's City Campus. It will feature presentations and panel discussions aimed at helping young people, particularly women and other underrepresented groups, get on the path to a career in physics. more...

UNL's University Theatre Opens Season With Dylan
University Theatre, the academic main stage producing wing of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, opens its 2010-2011 season with Dylan by Sidney Michaels. Directed by Aaron Sawyer, an MFA candidate in Directing for Stage and Screen as partial fulfillment of his degree, Dylan is on the Studio Theatre stage Oct. 8-9 and Oct. 12-15 at 7:30 p.m.
Set in 1950's Wales and America, Dylan follows acclaimed Welsh poet and public speaker Dylan Thomas to the colleges, bars and bedrooms of his last American tour and finally to the ship that carried him home. Tickets are $16, $14 faculty/staff and senior citizen, $10 students with ID. UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Restrepo and Stonewall Uprising. Stonewall Uprising will screen through Oct. 14, while Restrepo will show through Oct. 21.
