Study Shows Good Leaders Need To Be a Little Bad (Sometimes)

Outgoing. Assertive. Calm. Practical. Decisive. These are obvious qualities that one would want in their leaders. But what about, say, arrogant, hesitant, overly dramatic, inflexible, or being a "yes-man"? A new study has found that when it comes to leading, some of those negative personality traits aren't such a bad thing, either.

The work, by researchers in the College of Business Administration, studied the development of leaders over a three-year period. Prior research had established that clearly positive personality qualities - such as extraversion, emotional stability and conscientiousness - had helpful effects on both the performance and the development of leaders. more...

Play Chronicles Palestinian Teen's Death

Aseel Asleh

The Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film is hosting the Nebraska premier of Jen Marlowe's new one-hour play, "There is a Field," at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 25 in the Temple Building.

The play is about Aseel Asleh, a Palestinian teen who was fatally shot by Israeli police. Asleh belonged to the pacifist group, Seeds of Peace, and was wearing the group's T-shirt when he died.

Lt. Gen. Patrick J. O'Reilly

U.S. Army Lieutenant General Patrick J. O'Reilly, Missile Defense Agency director, will present a briefing 11 a.m., Oct. 25 in Jorgensen Hall. He will discuss the mission of the MDA and employment opportunities in the Missile Defense Career Development Program. The presentation is free and open to faculty, staff and students.

The Missile Defense Agency is part of the Department of Defense and is building a missile defense capability to protect the United States, its deployed forces, allies and friends against all ranges of enemy ballistic missiles in all phases of flight. The MDA has a diverse workforce and offers employees a hands-on approach to obtaining specific skills and experience in cutting-edge technology. more...

 

Dia de los Muertos
Sheldon Noting Dia de los Muertos Oct. 25-Nov. 15

A colorful "ofrenda," Spanish poetry and art will adorn Sheldon Museum of Art's Great Hall and galleries this October in Celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Music, dancing and food will be part of two special events celebrating the centuries old spiritual tradition that expresses the continuity of life by honoring the dead on their return to Earth for one day each year.

The museum's Great Hall will be elaborately decorated starting Oct. 25. Papier-mache sculptures, masks and papel picados will hang from the windows. An ofrenda (altar) will be available for visitors to honor their loved ones. The small sculptures and masks used in the decorations will be available for purchase through a silent auction beginning Oct. 25 and closing Nov. 12. more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Life During Wartime and Cairo Time. Life During Wartime will screen through through Oct. 28, while Cairo Time will show through Nov. 4.
