Lim to Lead Engineering Mechanics Open House

Engineering Mechanics will hold an open house, 3 to 5 p.m., Dec. 7 in the Biomaterials and Mechanotransduction Lab, room 129, Scott Engineering Center. Jung Yul Lim, assistant professor of engineering mechanics, will lead the event.

Information will be presented on Lim's team's work to control cell behavior using engineering tools for regenerative medicine. more...

Students to Announce Results of Political Poll
Political poll

The UNL student body is equally liberal and conservative, but there are more Republicans than Democrats, according to a survey designed and administered by undergraduate students. Students will present the results of the UNL Election Study on Dec. 7 and host a question-and-answer session at 12:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union (room posted). The event is open to faculty, staff and students.

The survey was designed and administered by undergraduate students in Michael Wagner's Political Science 230 class. The class studied elections, political parties, and special interests. more...

Engineering Students Host 'Incredible, Edible' Car Competition is Today

UNL's East Campus engineering programs will host the fifth annual "Incredible, Edible Car Competition" from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Great Plains Room in the Nebraska East Union. Senior students will present their Capstone design projects and alums representing companies will be in attendance.

The cars compete in distance and durability as they roll down ramps. The constraints are the components, which must be edible, and their cost, which must be less than $10 per team. Teams have several weeks to design, brainstorm, shop, build stereotypes, test and tweak. After the competition, teams must eat their creations while the judges tally the score. more...

Matt Joeckel HARDIN HALL AUDITORIUM, 7PM
Joeckel to Discuss Hidden Consequences of Mineral Resources

UNL geologist Matt Joeckel will present "The Arrogance of Ignorance: Mineral Resources and Civilization" at 7 p.m., Dec. 7 in Hardin Hall. His presentation will address the hidden environmental and social consequences of using mineral resources. The talk is free and open to the public.

Joeckel will describe how a handful of basic mineral resources have shaped human history and what strategic and critical minerals may shape foreign policy decisions in the future. He will also discuss Nebraska's mineral resources and their global relationships, from the state's potash industry during World War I to the Current interest in rare earth elements and niobium. more...

UHC Offers 'Stress Free Zone'

The University Health Center is offering a "Stress Free Zone" as campus gears up for finals week. The zone, sponsored by the UHC's Health Education and Outreach group, is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 7 in the East Union, and Dec. 8-9 in the Nebraska Union.

The Stress Free Zone will include snacks, giveaways, massages and fun activities. All events are free. more...

 

Combined Campaign
Combined Campaign Contribution Period Extended

UNL's Combined Campaign has been extended through Dec. 17 and organizers announce giving has reached 78 percent ($334,000) of the $430,000 total goal. Combined Campaign chair Mike Zeleny reminds UNL faculty and staff that they can give online or download forms online because the campaign this year is going "paperless."

To date, 1186 donors have contributed to the campaign. Last year a total of 2,245 donors supported the campaign. Donors can pledge online at the Combined Campaign website. Paper pledge cards are available for download on the site as well.

Lebanon; 127 Hours Play at the Ross

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Lebanon and 127 Hours. Lebanon will screen through Dec. 9, while 127 Hours will show through Dec. 23.
