Boston Brass Brings Big Band Christmas to Lied
The Boston Brass and the Brass All-Stars Big Band are celebrating the holiday season with a 7:30 p.m., Dec. 11 performance at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The concert will feature 14 horns and a rhythm section performing the Stan Kenton Christmas and other holiday hits.
A pre-show talk will be led by UNL's Scott Anderson, professor of trombone. The 7 p.m. talk, free to ticket holders, is in the Lied Center's Steinhart Room. Nebraska Rep Offers 'Gift of the Magi'
The Nebraska Repertory Theatre celebrates the season with a musical adaptation of the O. Henry short story "The Gift of the Magi." Performances are 7:30 p.m., Dec. 10 and 11, and 2 p.m., Dec. 11 and 12 in Temple Building's Studio Theatre.
Individual tickets are $20 general admission; $18 faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $10 for students with a valid ID. Clay Club Hosts Holiday Sale, Raffle

The UNL Clay Club is hosting a sale and raffle exhibition from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Dec. 10 and from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Dec. 11 in Richards Hall room 118. The money raised will help bring in visiting artists from all over the world to give lectures, presentations and demonstrations.
Oregon-based studio potter Victoria Christen was a visiting artist in the ceramics department earlier this year. One of her pieces will be available to win in the holiday raffle. It is not necessary to be present to win the raffle. Clay Club members gather their inspiration from a wide range of places, with some pieces taking months to finish.

'Amahl and the Night Visitors' Performances are Dec. 11
The School of Music will host two performances of the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., Dec. 11 in the Lied Center's Johnny Carson Theater. The performances are free and open to the public. To reserve seats, call 472-2494.
This is the seventh consecutive year professor William Shomos has directed this opera as a collaborative effort between UNL and Lincoln Public Schools. more...
Exhibit examines 'Environmental Protection'

A collection of apparel rooted in clothing in relation to the environment is featured in a new exhibit at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery Dec. 6-22. The Hillestad Gallery will hold an artist reception 5-6:30 p.m. Dec. 10. All events are free and open to the public.
"Environmental Protection Garments, Because Tomorrow Never Knows" is the thesis project of Erica White, a graduate student in Textiles, Clothing and Design. Her work explores protecting the environment as well as protecting the body from the environment. White designed garments with sustainable techniques including digital textile printing on organic cotton, the use of recycled textiles and industrial castoffs, low waste production, and natural dyes. more...
Registration Opens for 'Marathon Training'
Campus Recreation is offering two sessions of its Marathon and Half Marathon Training class in the spring. Session 1 meets 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 18 to April 26. Session 2 meets 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 20 to April 28.
The classes are for runners of all levels and will prepare people for the annual Lincoln Marathon or Half Marathon, which are May 1. The 15-week class includes running technique, weight training, nutrition, injury prevention, motivation and goal-setting, a technical running shirt, a water bottle, weekly group runs, "Yoga for Runners" class (twice weekly), and an individualized running form analysis by a physical therapist. more...

Combined Campaign Contribution Period Extended
UNL's Combined Campaign has been extended through Dec. 17. The campaign has raised 78 percent ($334,000) of the $430,000 goal. To date, 1,186 donors have contributed to the campaign. Last year, a total of 2,245 donors supported the campaign.
The Combined Campaign has gone paperless this year, with donors making pledges online at the Combined Campaign website. Faculty and staff can make pledges on the website or download donation forms. more...

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Next; 127 Hours Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Next and 127 Hours. Both films will screen through Dec. 23.
