Alumni Association Offers Study Space

Stop into Wick Alumni Center between 8 a.m. and midnight, where the Nebraska Alumni Association is offering a quiet study atmosphere during finals week. There will be free beverages and snacks, and all UNL students are welcome to attend.

Registration Open for 'Marathon Training'

Campus Recreation is offering two sessions of its Marathon and Half Marathon Training class in the spring. Session 1 meets 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 18 to April 26. Session 2 meets 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 20 to April 28.

The classes are for runners of all levels and will prepare people for the annual Lincoln Marathon or Half Marathon, which are May 1. The 15-week class includes running technique, weight training, nutrition, injury prevention, motivation and goal-setting, a technical running shirt, a water bottle, weekly group runs, "Yoga for Runners" class (twice weekly), and an individualized running form analysis by a physical therapist. more...

Researchers Show Role of Genetics in Determining Gastrointestinal Organisms

UNL scientists have proven that the makeup of the microbial organisms in the gastrointestinal system is partly a result of genetics - a major breakthrough toward understanding and ultimately figuring out how to manipulate those microbiota to benefit human health.

This relationship between gut microbiota and their hosts' genes long has been suspected, but UNL's research is the first to confirm it, said Andrew Benson, UNL food microbiologist who led the research team. more...

 

4 Students Earn Gilman Scholarships to Study Abroad
Gilman Scholarships

Four UNL students have earned a Gilman Scholarship to study abroad. The four winners are Sarah Anthony and Irina Sulejmanovic of Lincoln, Hans Christensen of Johnson and Michaela Wolf of Omaha.

Anthony is a senior majoring in music with minors in math and Spanish. She received a $4,500 scholarship to study at the National University of Ireland in Galway during the spring semester. Her studies in Ireland will focus on the acoustics of music, electronic music composition and sound synthesis. more...

 

Combined Campaign
Final day for Combined Campaign giving is Dec. 17

UNL's Combined Campaign has been extended through Dec. 17. The campaign has raised 83 percent ($358,218) of the $430,000 goal. To date, 1,250 donors have contributed to the campaign. Last year, a total of 2,245 donors supported the campaign.

The Combined Campaign has gone paperless this year, with donors making pledges online at the Combined Campaign website. Faculty and staff can make pledges on the website or download donation forms. more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Next and 127 Hours. Both films will screen through Dec. 23.
