Steve Forbes to meet with students

Steve Forbes

Steve Forbes, president and CEO of Forbes Inc., editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine and a two-time presidential candidate, will meet with UNL students at 9 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Nebraska Union. The College of Business Administration will host Forbes' campus visit. He is expected to address students and then answer questions from a panel made up of students from the business and journalism colleges.

Forbes sought the GOP nomination in 1996 and 2000. As head of Forbes Inc., he often makes appearances on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News and is a widely respected economic prognosticator. more...

Katz to Discuss Politics of Still Life Paintings

Wendy Katz, UNL associate professor of art and art history, will give a talk focusing on nationalism and politics manifested in 19th century still life paintings at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 1 in the Sheldon Museum of Art. The talk is in conjunction with Poetical Fire, the Sheldon's still life exhibition. The talk is free and open to the public.

Bison Books
Bison Books Publishes Into 50th Year

Bison Books, the University of Nebraska Press paperback arm, is celebrating 50 years of publishing some of Western literature's most iconic and valued stories. To coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration, the press is set to release a reader on March 1 that will showcase a variety of work by some of Western literature's most famed authors.

"The reader has excerpts from more prominent authors who have been published by Bison Books like Mari Sandoz, Willa Cather, John Neihardt and Wright Morris," said Cara Pesek, NU press publicity manager. In addition to the reader, the press plans to republish books that helped develop and refine the paperback line. One such title, "Lord Grizzly" written by Frederick Manfred, is an epic Western novel that follows a mountain man throughout his journey of survival after being mauled by a grizzly bear. more...

 

Mayberry is Journalism's Third 'Innovator in Residence'

Jessica Mayberry

Jessica Mayberry, founding director of Video Volunteers, is the third Innovator in Residence at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. She will visit the college Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, working directly with students to explain how to give a voice to under-served populations.

Video Volunteers combines trainers with inexpensive cameras teaching rural Indian villagers to tell stories of positive social change. It has the most diverse network of full-time, salaried, community video producers in the world, who work in 14 different community-based media units in the IndiaUnheard program. more...
