Paul Johnsgard will discuss and sign copies of his new book, "Sandhill and Whooping Cranes: Ancient Voices Over America's Wetlands," at 7 p.m., Feb. 9 at the University Bookstore. Johnsgard is Foundation Regents Professor Emeritus in UNL's School of Biological Sciences. He is the author of more than 50 books on natural history.

Johnsgard has spent nearly half a century observing cranes, from a yearly foray to Nebraska's Platte River valley for spring migration, to pilgrimages to the birds' wintering grounds in Arizona and nesting territory in Alaska. In this book he draws from his own extensive experience as well as the latest science to offer a richly detailed and deeply felt account of the ecology of Sandhill and whooping cranes and the wetlands in which they live. more...

Thomas Lowry, with Sandia National Laboratories, will present "Assessing the Near-Term Risk of Climate Uncertainty: Interdependencies Among the U.S. States" at 3:30 p.m., Feb. 9 in the Hardin Hall Auditorium.

The lecture continues the UNL Water Center's spring seminar series. The purpose of the Spring Water Seminar Series is to provide a forum to increase awareness of water issues and for thoughtful discussion of alternatives aimed at the wise management of Nebraska's surface and groundwater resources. more...

'Remember the Titans' Coach to Speak

Herman Boone

Legendary football coach Herman Boone will speak at 7:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. The lecture is organized by the University Program Council.

Famously portrayed by Denzel Washington in the 2000 film "Remember the Titans," Boone will share his experience of overcoming the odds to take a football team divided by racial intolerance to new heights of a championship, and more importantly, friendship. His 1971 team at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., went undefeated and won the state championship despite playing in a time when racial integration was met with strong resistance. more...

 

Canticleer Director to Work With Music Students

Matt Oltman

Matt Oltman, music director of the award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer, will work with UNL conducting students and choirs on Feb. 9. Oltman will instruct students enrolled in graduate choral conducting (11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.), the University Singers (1:30 to 2:20 p.m.) and the Varsity Men's Chorus (2:30 to 3:20 p.m.). All sessions will be in Westbrook Music Building, room 130.

Chanticleer is a San Francisco-based Grammy-winning vocal ensemble. Oltman has been a member since 1999. He is now the music director of the group. Oltman is a highly sought conductor, editor, clinician and performer appearing in concert halls around the world. more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Another Year and The Illusionist. Both films will screen through Feb. 17.
