Alice in Wonderland

LIED CENTER FOR PERFORMING ARTS, FRI 7:30PM
'Alice in Wonderland' Ballet Plays the Lied

The Eugene Ballet Company will perform its version of "Alice in Wonderland" complete with fantasy masks, stunning costumes and narration at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 18 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Ticket prices are $35 for general admission and $17.50 for students.

Prior to the performance the Lied will celebrate with "Un-Birthday" tea and treats. The celebration will include special appearances by characters from the "Alice in Wonderland" story and ballet. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to the Lied Center website or call 472-4747.

 

Women's Self Defense Training is Feb. 19

Campus Recreation is offering a Women's Self Defense training session, 1 to 5 p.m., Feb. 19 in the Rec Center's combative arts room. The session will be taught by Tim Gorhman of Omaha's Six Point Self Defense.

Training will cover basic awareness, posture, how to stay vocal, basic striking, choke defense, ground assault defense and some weapon defense. Participants will also learn how to deal with a carjacking and how to use everyday purse items as weapons, followed by an attack simulation. Each class will last approximately four hours depending upon the number of participants.

Cost is $25 for UNL students and Campus Rec members, and $75 for the general public. Pre-registration is required. Sign up at the Campus Rec Center, East Campus Activities Building, or at the Campus Recreation website. more...

Morrill Hall Hosts 'Sunday with a Scientist' on Parasites

The NU State Museum presents a "Sunday with a Scientist" program for children and families about parasites from 1:30-4:30 p.m., Feb. 20 at Morrill Hall. The program will be led by faculty, staff and students of the museum's Parasitology Division in the Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology.

The scientists will share information on the diversity of parasites in the museum's collection and discuss their research in parasite biodiversity, systematics, biogeography and taxonomy. Visitors will be able to view photos of parasitic specimens and investigate them in vials and with microscopes. more...

Harlem Gospel Choir to Perform at Lied Center
Harlem Gospel Choir

The Harlem Gospel Choir will give a live performance at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 19 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Admission is free for UNL students as part of the Lied's "Arts for All" program. To receive free tickets, visit the Lied Center on UNL Marketplace.

The world-famous Harlem Gospel Choir is America's premier gospel choir, and has traveled the globe for 25 years sharing its joy of faith and raising funds for children's charities. The choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey who got the idea for the choir while attending a celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Today the choir presents the finest singers and musicians from black churches in Harlem and the New York area.

 

Sheldon Hosts Ames Piano Quartet
Ames Piano Quartet

The Sheldon Friends of Chamber Music season continues Feb. 18 with the Ames Piano Quartet in the Sheldon Museum of Art's Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Single tickets are available for $35 for adults and $8 for students.

Lincoln native George Work returns with the Ames Piano Quartet, currently in residence at Iowa State University. The group, in its 35th year, has recorded eight albums and will soon begin work on its ninth. This is the quartet's fourth appearance with the Sheldon Friends of Chamber Music. more...
