James Alleman

James Alleman is one of five candidates for dean of the College of Engineering selected by the search committee to visit campus. He will give a public presentation 3:30 p.m. today in Walter Scott Engineering Center room 237.

Alleman joined Iowa State's Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering as professor and chair in 2005. Prior academic appointments at Purdue University and the University of Maryland also included two service roles at Purdue, as both Assistant Chair in the School of Civil Engineering and as Associate Director of a NASA NSCORT advanced life support research center. All of his degrees were from the University of Notre Dame, in civil and environmental engineering. more...

UNL is observing National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, Feb. 20-25. The theme is a week to "Be Comfortable in Your Genes." All events are free and open to the public.

Dominguez Featured in NSF Webcast
Aaron Dominguez

UNL physicist Aaron Dominguez was featured this week with Gustaaf Brooijmans of Columbia University in a National Science Foundation webcast about the two largest experiments at the Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border near Geneva, Switzerland.

Dominguez represented the hundreds of U.S. particle physicists working on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment and Brooijmans those working the ATLAS experiment. In the 45-minute interview, they discuss 2011 and beyond for the experiments, the search for the Higgs boson, and the restart of the Large Hadron Collider, which could occur Feb. 21. New Interdisciplinary Minor Offered by Three Colleges

Three UNL colleges are offering a new undergraduate minor in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The minor has been approved by the colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Arts and Sciences, and Engineering.

The interdisciplinary curriculum prepares students to understand, use, and develop advanced computational methods and tools for processing, visualizing, and analyzing biological data and for modeling biological processes. Studies in computational biology and bioinformatics span biosciences, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and statistics. The coursework prepares students for careers in biomedical, biotechnology, agricultural, pharmaceutical, and engineering fields and for related graduate study programs. more...

 

Water for Food Seminar Registration Due Feb. 21

Marc Andreini, an international water expert, will discuss "Small Reservoirs in Africa" during a free lunch seminar, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 23 in Hardin Hall. The presentation is hosted by the University of Nebraska Water for Food Institute.

Faculty, Professionals Can Apply for Fulbright Programs
Fulbright

UNL faculty and professionals are encouraged to apply for the Fulbright Scholar Program, which sends more than 800 faculty and professionals abroad annually.

Applications for Fulbright Scholar awards are being accepted through Aug. 1 for 2012-2013. Traditional Fulbright terms last from two months to an entire academic year. Recipients lecture and conduct research in a variety of academic and professional fields. Award programs include Fulbright Specialist, Distinguished Chairs, and International Education Administrators. more...
