Allen and Patty Eckman's cast paper sculptures

Renowned cast paper sculptors Allen and Patty Eckman will be working in the lobby of the Great Plains Art Museum to create two commissioned artworks for the museum's permanent collection. Visitors are welcome to come and observe their work, interact with the artists, or contact the curator to schedule a tour group.

Arbor Day Celebration, Tree Planting
Arbor Day Trees bring life

UNL will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting ceremony, 11 to 11:30 a.m., today by the bridge in East Campus' Maxwell Arboretum.

Ronnie Green, NU vice president and Harlan Vice Chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, will provide brief remarks and help plant a tree. Representatives from UNL Landscape Services, ReTree Nebraska and Friends of the Maxwell Arboretum will also assist with the planting. more...

'Focus Nebraska' for Earth Week; Events Continue
Earth Day

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's student government, ASUN, and the Environmental Resource Center have organized a weeklong event, "Focus Nebraska" April 18-22 during the week of Earth Day, April 22. Today at 7:30 p.m., a screening of the NET documentary "Secrets Beneath the Ice," illustrating the groundbreaking research made in the Antarctic by UNL geology professor David Harwood and the ANDRILL team, will be shown at the Jackie Gaughan Mulitcultural Center, room 212.

The main goal of "Focus Nebraska" is to educate students and the rest of the university community about the climate and the environment. Activities and programs have been planned, such as campuswide bike rides, lectures, documentary films, tree planting and an art display. The events are free and open to the public. more...

Omaha World-Herald Columnist Rowell to Host Book Reading, Signing

Omaha World-Herald columnist Rainbow Rowell will read and discuss her first novel, "Attachments," at 7 p.m. in the University Bookstore. A book signing will follow.

A UNL graduate, Rowell was an editor and columnist for the Daily Nebraskan. She lives in Nebraska with her family. When she's not writing, she's reading comic books, planning Disney World trips and arguing with people about things that really don't matter in the big scheme of things. UNLPD Offers 'Situational Awareness' to Faculty, Staff
Situational awareness

The UNL Police Department is offering training and information sessions on "situational awareness." The sessions, designed for faculty and staff, will include information on things to think about and how to protect yourself during what could be a volatile situation.

Situational awareness means understanding how information, events and an people's actions will impact an individual's safety - and possibly their survival - in emergency situations. Hour-long sessions in the Nebraska Union are 10 a.m., April 19; 10 a.m., April 21; and 10 a.m., April 22. No pre-registration is required. For more information, call 472-2222.

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Woodmans and Win Win. The Woodmans will screen through Apr. 21, while Win Win will show through May 5.
