These courses also serve as elective options for degree completion in many
academic programs on campus so students can graduate on time and are an important part of the undergraduate student plan in the Nutrition and Health Sciences major. Recreational Activity Courses are designed to be experiential, building skill independence after the course concludes. In order for students of all experience levels to build proficiency, Recreational Activity Courses focus the majority of course time in activity with technical equipment refining various foundational skills often outside of a traditional classroom.
Below are some fast facts about the Recreational Activity Courses:
▪ There are currently 60 – 70 courses offered across several disciplines including Combative Arts (COMB), Fitness (FITN), Individual & Dual Activities (INDV), Outdoor Education (ODED), and Racquet Sports (RACS).
▪ Most of the Recreational Activity Courses are introductory in nature and therefore require little to no previous experience in the subject matter prior to enrollment. A select few courses, such as Weight Training, Massage, Bowling, and Yoga, provide advanced level courses to give students a more in-depth
focus on the fundamentals of the skills once they have completed the introductory course.
▪ Within the Recreational Activity course offerings, course length ranges from 2 days to 15 weeks with most courses being 6 weeks in length.
▪ The majority of the Recreational Activity courses start at the beginning of the semester or the week following fall and spring breaks. However, new courses begin almost every week of the semester to provide options for students who have a sudden change in schedule.
