This semester a record 13 students are studying Portuguese 1. Portuguese 1 and 2 will be offered again next semester. As you help students prepare to register for spring classes, please inform them of these opportunities to study a language that can open many doors for them.
Why should our students study Portuguese?
• Portuguese is the first language of over 210 million people. It is spoken in 11 countries on 4 continents. (UNESCO estimates that by 2050 Portuguese will be spoken by approximately 335 million people.)
• Learning Portuguese can set our students apart. Few English speakers also speak Portuguese. Far more English speakers also speak Spanish, French, or German.
• Brazil is the world’s 7th largest economy and 5th largest country.
• Trade between the US and Brazil is increasing and is projected to continue increasing.
• Portuguese is a relatively easy language to learn, especially if students already know some Spanish, French, or Italian.
• Students who are successful in at least one semester of Portuguese study at UNL are then eligible for special Portuguese-abroad scholarships.
• Portuguese study this spring will be great preparation for those students wishing to enroll in one of next summer’s education abroad opportunities in Brazil.
