A new course in the Department of Philosophy that Kutak Ethics Center staff will help facilitate is PHIL 299: Independent Study - Ethics Bowl. Many students have successfully participated in Ethics Bowl. Now, they can earn 3 credit hours in philosophy for their effort.
To briefly elaborate, a student does not have to be a competing member on the UNL Ethics Bowl Team to enroll and successfully complete the course. If they'd like to be competing team members, they can try out. Until then, they will be considered non-competing members. Non-competing members do not have to travel to regional or national competition. Also, if a student would like to participate as a member of the UNL Ethics Bowl Team but does not want to take the course for credit, that is ok too.
In order to enroll in the course, students will need to do two things: (1) Gain a permission code from (ethics@unl.edu), and (2) Sign up for PHIL 299 through MyRed. We will cap the course at 15 - 20 students.
Ethics Bowl is a competitive discussion. Teams are scored on the clarity and depth of their take on questions inspired by the competition cases. Among other things, competing in Ethics Bowl hones critical thinking, moral reasoning, and public discussion skills as competitors express their point of view on controversial, timely topics. It also expands competitors’ understanding of professional, practical, and theoretical ethics which in turn increases their sensitivity to moral considerations that are likely to arise in the real world. Hence, involvement adds to their foundation for life long learning and compassionate living through critical understanding.
