New Honors Experiences for Honors Credits

Beginning in the summer of 2016, Honors Program students will be able to earn honors credit for select co-curricular experiences. Students will be limited to a maximum of two Honors Experiences, which fulfill requirements of a total of 6 substituted Honors hours. Students can earn 3 honors hours (zero credit, P/NP) via substitution for the following co-curricular experiences:

• Education Abroad experiences for which a student is earning at least 3 credit hours
• Internships in a student’s professional field lasting a minimum of 6 weeks to a semester, approximately 12-30 hours/week
• Civic Engagement projects requiring a minimum of 50 working hours in a semester. These are substantial projects outside of an RSO volunteer experience in which the student is engaged off- campus with a community agency or in which the student has taken significant leadership initiative
• Undergraduate research/creative activity for a period of one academic year or summer in an approved setting on campus, or a documented formal off-campus research experience
In order to apply such experiences towards a student’s required Honors credit, students must

• Submit a pre-approval form at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the experience along with the appropriate documentation to confirm participation.
• Register for a 98H in one of these categories: Study Abroad, Research, Internship, or Civic Engagement.
• Complete and submit a 2-page reflection mid-way through the experience; complete a 5-page reflective paper two weeks before the experience ends. (Exact dates will be determined by Dr. Damuth based on dates of involvement.)

For information, please contact Dr. Damuth in the Fellowships Office (118 Neihardt).

Although students are limited to a maximum of two Honors Experiences, those experiences may come from the same category. For example, you can have two, separate study abroad experiences.

*Because these experiences substitute for honors credit, any honors experience that can be covered by an honors contract or by 399H/499H are not eligible. Also not eligible are any courses taken at other U.S. institutions.

Reminders: Only experiences starting in the summer of 2016 are eligible. Honors hours earned in the summer count forward.
