The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Percussion Ensemble performed during the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) on Nov. 10, as one of four ensembles to win the Percussive Arts Society's International Percussion Ensemble Competition.
"The Percussion Ensemble has never won this competition before," said Glenn Korff School of Music Assistant Professor of Percussion Dave Hall.
He equates it to winning the Super Bowl in the percussion world.
“It’s really the highest achievement in the percussion ensemble art form,” he said. “To be selected is really a confirmation of the quality of students here and their playing.”
Their program included six contemporary pieces, including “Spine” by Michael Laurello, featuring multiple percussion and piano; “120bpm" from "neither Anvil nor Pulley” by Dan Trueman, featuring laptop and percussion quartet; “Estudios de Frontera” by Alejandro Viñao, featuring a quintet of mostly keyboard percussion; and “Slide” by Hall, which is a new piece for percussion orchestra that he composed for the occasion.
