Los Alamos National Laboratory and UNL have teamed up to provide further educational opportunities for students interested in careers in biodefense fields.

NU's National Strategic Research Institute organized the partnership with the New Mexico-based laboratory. The project aims to provide research opportunities in the diagnosis and detection of infectious diseases through the development of novel biosensor devices.

Mark Riley, who is currently serving as associate dean for research in the College of Engineering, and Ken Bayles, professor of pathology and microbiology at UNMC, lead the Nebraska side of the collaboration.

"We are interested in technology development, new methods of analysis and modeling, and in translation and use of new schemes to monitor microbes in a variety of environments," said Riley, in the Nebraska Today news release. "We are especially interested in connections of students at the graduate and undergraduate levels."
