Good News: Student Edition

2018 UNL SPRING RESEARCH FAIR POSTER WINNERS
BSE had several poster winners in the 2018 Spring Research Fair, which was hosted by the Office of Research and Economic Development. Prizes were awarded to top posters by 96 reviewers in the undergraduate competition and over 30 reviewers in the graduate competition. Undergraduates were also rated on presentation skills.

Doctoral student Meetpal Kukal won first honors in the College of Engineering division for his poster “Irrigation-Limited Yield Gaps: Trends and Variability in the United States Post-1950.” He will receive a $400 travel grant to present his research at a regional or national conference (advisor Suat Irmak). Doctoral student Tyler Kozisek won a commendation award from the College of Engineering for his poster and will receive $200. Tyler was also selected as a
research fair highlight
by the Office of Graduate Studies.

Seniors Jena Wilson and Alison Manske and Connor Gee won undergraduate awards of $250, sponsored by their colleges. Jena’s poster was on “Civic Engagement in an Undergraduate Course Focused on Socioscientific Issues” under Jenny Dauer. Alison and Connor’s poster was on “Nanoparticle Treatment to Improve Motor Function after Traumatic Brain Injury” under Forrest Kievit.

ENSHI LIU WINS BEST POSTER AWARD
Enshi Liu received a Best Poster Presentation Award at the Annual Meeting of the Alliance for Advanced Sanitation that was held on Innovation Campus during the week of May 24. Enshi is a doctoral student advised by Dr. Mark Wilkins.

WINNERS OF THE ELENORE GAKEMEIER SWARTS SPRING 2018 TRAVEL AWARDS
The following students have been awarded the Elenore Gakemeier Swarts Graduate Student Travel Awards for Spring 2018:

The award covers up to $500 for travel to conferences or to present research. Applications are accepted from BSE graduate students twice per year in March and August.

CLASS OF 2018 STUDENT ATHLETES RECOGNIZED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Two-time All-American athlete and BSE graduate Steven Cahoy (Grand Island, Nebraska) was recognized by 1011Now prior to graduation.

MEETPAL KUKAL TAKES HOME AWARDS
Meetpal Kukal is the recipient of two awards during the spring 2018 recognition season. Meetpal was first recognized as a winner of an Outstanding Graduate Research & Creative Activities Award from the
Office of Graduate Studies
. These awards are funded by the family of Lowe R. & Mavis M. Folsom and the University Foundation.

Meetpal also is the winner of a 2017-2018 Milton Mohr Graduate Fellowship from the College of Engineering. He was recognized at the Engineering Graduate Student Recognition Event on Friday, April 27. Suat Irmak is his advisor.

MSYM MAJOR MEMBER OF WINNING NEBRASKA CROPS JUDGING TEAM
Mitch Zobel, a mechanized systems management major, was a member of the Nebraska's Crops Judging Team which received top honors at a recent North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Judging Conference National Collegiate Competition. The competition took place at Northeast Community College in Norfolk with 43 colleges and universities competing in 12 different categories. The Nebraska team placed second in the Precision Agriculture contest. Zobel individually placed third in individual overall and second place in the Precision Agricultural Analysis component. He was recognized in Nebraska Today’s Achievements for June 1, 2018.
