BSE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENTS

Several students with ties to BSE were named 2019 recipients of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP).

Hunter Miller, a current graduate student and alumnus in Biological Systems Engineering (advisor Forrest Kievit), was awarded in the Engineering - other Field of Study for Biological Systems Engineering.

Allison Porter received a fellowship to study Biomedical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Allison is alumna of the Biological Systems Engineering major.

The NSF GRFP provides support for outstanding graduate students in STEM disciplines. Students must be pursuing research-based Master's or doctoral degrees within the United States. GRFP fellows receive a three-year annual stipend and opportunities for international research and professional development.

NEBRASKA CROPS JUDGING TEAM WINS THIRD PLACE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

MSYM graduate student Samantha Teten helped the UNL Crops Judging Team to place third overall in the national North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Student Judging Conference. Samantha placed seventh overall in the individual competition.

The team participated in the four-year university division. The competition took place at Murray State University in Kentucky on April 13.

Nebraska Today featured the team in "Achievements | Honors, awards, publications for May 17."

NATHAN RICE APPOINTED EXTENSION EDUCATOR FOR SCOTTSBLUFF 4-H

Nathan Rice, graduate from the Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering Master's degree (advisor Jenny Keshwani), was appointed as the extension educator in 4-H Youth Development for Nebraska Extension in Scottsbluff. Nathan will work in Scotts Bluff, Kimball and Banner counties. The role entails leading and supporting regional and statewide 4-H programs in science education, animal science, agricultural literacy, career development, community development, and healthy living.

While at BSE, Nathan held a graduate research assistantship with UNL Extension and BSE. His research included work on an NSF grant to teach agriculture sustainability and systems thinking via video and board games.

11 BSE STUDENTS RECEIVE SUMMER UCARE STIPENDS

Congratulations to several BSE undergraduate students who received Nebraska's Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experience (UCARE) Program awards. Recipients are provided stipends of $2,400 to engage in intensive research. They work for 20 hours per week with faculty advisors and receive mentoring, workshops, and activities.

SYDNEY D’HUYVETTER FEATURED BY ENGLER AGRIBUSINESS ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAM

May 2019 Mechanized Systems Management graduate Sydney D’Huyvetter was recently featured as an alumni of the IANR Engler Agribusiness Entrepreneurship Program. Sydney took part in the program during his time at UNL to support his business LUX Contracting and Development.

SPRING DEANS' LIST / HONOR ROLL STUDENTS FROM BSE

BSE students received several spring semester honors including those who were named to the Deans' Lists for the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

CASNR students must maintain a GPA of 3.75 to be included on the list. COE students must maintain a GPA of 3.5.

The list includes:
80 Biological Systems Engineering majors,
25 Agricultural Engineering majors, and
15 Mechanized Systems Management.

SCHMIDT LAB PRESENTS AT WASTE-TO-WORTH CONFERENCE, AWARDS

Agustin Olivo (M.S. MSYM) presented a poster at the 2019 Waste-to-Worth Conference in Minneapolis, MN on April 24, 2019, titled, On-Farm Research and Student Engagement to Assess and Promote Manure and Mulch as Land Treatment Practices in Nebraska.

Mara Zelt (M.S. ABSE) presented a poster at the 2019 Waste-to-Worth Conference in Minneapolis, MN on April 24, 2019, titled, i(AM)Responsible: A Nationwide Network for Engaging Consumers and Agricultural Producers in Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Mara was awarded 2nd place in the Graduate Student Poster Competition and received a $300 cash award.

Eric Henning (B.S. BSE) was awarded an IANR Agricultural Research Division Undergraduate Student Research Program grant for $2,500 to conduct research investigating the biomass decomposition rates, carbon cycle dynamics and nitrogen fate of land applied livestock manure and cedar woodchips to complement related on-farm research activities. Eric’s 12-month undergraduate research appointment began in May 2019.
